From Calling to Cottage...
From Calling to Cottage
Literacy Cottage is rooted in the callings that have shaped my life: serving children and families, fostering meaningful growth, and helping students develop confidence in themselves as lifelong learners.
After graduating from Texas A&M University, I spent the next decade serving children and families through school-based case management and chemical dependency counseling. While pursuing graduate studies and a career in counseling, I was unexpectedly invited to consider a position as a Special Education teacher. That invitation opened the door that ultimately shaped my life's work. After earning my Texas Special Education certifications, I discovered the tremendous joy of championing students through academic challenges, nurturing their confidence, and helping them take meaningful steps toward the person they were created to be. Although I later stepped away from the classroom to support my husband’s business and devote those precious early years to raising our two sons, my heart for teaching never faded.
I returned to education as a Special Education Resource teacher before serving as a Reading Interventionist and Dyslexia teacher. I also had the privilege of leading the implementation of the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum on my campus, training and coaching teachers while helping bring research-informed literacy instruction into classrooms. Through these experiences, I witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact that evidence-based literacy instruction can have on a child's confidence and future.
Those experiences affirmed my passion for structured literacy and inspired me to continue deepening my knowledge as I pursue certification as an Academic Language Practitioner. Literacy Cottage was born from that same commitment—a place where research-informed instruction is thoughtfully paired with a warm, literature-rich environment inspired by the classical tradition.
My hope is that every child who walks through the door feels seen, encouraged, and genuinely at home. It is a privilege to partner with families in this important work, and I would be honored to be part of your child's reading journey.
